Several areas in eastern Libya were hit by floods and torrents due to the storm 'Daniel' on Monday, September 11, 2023. This led to the death and disappearance of thousands according to initial estimates. Entire neighborhoods, covering an area of 100 square kilometers, disappeared, and entire families were lost. It was classified as the worst disaster the country has witnessed in many years. The number of casualties reached 11,300 people, with 7,000 wounded and 20,000 missing. Two dams also collapsed, creating a state of frenzy in the disaster sites
As the flood had left cities submerged in water, many of the survivors have to be transferred to temporary shelters where they will have to live in tents until the recovery phase is completed by the relevant authorities. As most of the tents are not insulated from the coldness of the winter, blankets will help to shield them from the cold weather
To ensure the affected families will be able to have proper meals during the aftermath of the disaster, food baskets were distributed to them. The food baskets will complement their nutritional needs as well as preventing hunger, especially among children while waiting for the recovery phase to be completed as the packages contain basic food items that can be cooked straightaway.
