BOSNIA

On 13 May 2014, unprecedented floods inundated large areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina, affecting over a million people, displacing 89,981 residents. The number of reported casualties is 25. The severe and widespread rains triggered over 3,000 landslides affecting 1 million people in 46 municipalities. 75,000 houses were hit by floods and/or landslides, of which 25,000 houses were severely damaged or completely destroyed. Many houses became uninhabitable as they were covered by soil up to the roof, not to mention neighbourhood being swept away by the water.

Food Assistance

Food items such as bread, groceries and raw materials were provided to the victims of the flood and landslide as many lost their houses during the natural disaster. The food assistance will help families to have food on their table at least until the recovery phase is completed. For families whose houses are completely destroyed, the food assistance will support their sustenance until they can sort things out.

Shelter

The survivors were sent to stay in shelters until the recovery phase is completed and the municipalities are declared safe by the relevant authorities. The shelter will also help families who had lost their homes to the natural disaster to have a place to stay until things are sorted out. The shelters are well equipped with separate rooms for privacy, beds, toilets and kitchen.

Post-Flood Recovery

The post-flood recovery includes the supply of cleaning equipment such as high pressure water jet pumps, wheelbarrows, shovels, boots, cleaning chemicals as well as manpower. As mud must be removed before it hardens, MRA joins the local community to clean the roads, public facilities and houses so that residents whose houses are still intact can immediately return to their respective homes.
