MRA, JICA CHAMPION INCLUSIVITY THROUGH EKIDEN RUN
Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA) joined hands with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and JICA Volunteers Malaysia Alumni Association (JVMA) to co-organise the Inclusive Universal Ekiden Run 2026 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpurrecently.
Rooted in a centuries-old Japanese relay tradition, the Ekiden has evolved into a global sporting event while retaining its cultural identity that emphasises teamwork, unity and collective responsibility.
In Malaysia, inclusivity was placed at the heart of the event. Participants with hearing, visual and physical disabilities ran alongside non-disabled runners in the same teams, working together to complete the race without leaving anyone behind.
MRA chief executive officer, Dr Shahrizal Azwan Samsudin said MRA was honoured to be entrusted as co-organiser of the Inclusive Universal Ekiden Run 2026.
“On behalf of MRA, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to JVMA and JICA Malaysia for the trust placed in us to serve as a co-organiser of this meaningful, value-driven initiative.
“This Ekiden run is more than just a sporting event. It is a celebration of unity, peace and shared humanity. It brings people together across cultures, abilities and backgrounds, promoting social integration and mutual understanding through collective movement and purpose,” he said.
Dr Shahrizal added that hosting the event at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa carried symbolic importance, underscoring that healthy living should be inclusive and accessible to all.
“It reminds us that public spaces can become platforms for solidarity, friendship and shared responsibility,” he said.
As a humanitarian organisation, he noted that MRA strongly believes in the power of collective action.
Dr Shahrizal said MRA looks forward to continuing such collaborations that strengthen bonds, celebrate diversity and reinforce the message that unity remains the community’s greatest strength.
MRA also conveyed its appreciation to JVMA chairperson, Prof Kanako and representatives from JICA who were present to enliven the programme, as well as to Hajah Fauziah Tahar and the MRA team for ensuring the smooth and orderly running of the event.
